About
The Achieving Standards of Excellence Foundation (ASOEF) was founded by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®- Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter members in 2002. The primary motivation for starting the Achieving Standards of Excellence Foundation was having a charitable organization that, through various funding channels, could offer more programming to encourage and assist individuals in achieving educational excellence. The Foundation status also allowed supporters to receive tax credits for donations they made to the Foundation supportive of the Foundation’s program efforts.
Alpha Sigma Omega Chapter includes over 470 graduate sorority members in Columbus. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is the first Greek Sorority founded by African-American women in 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. Today, this national service organization is comprised of over 300,000 college-trained women from around the world.
The Achieving Standards of Excellence Foundation has a name that speaks to its main purpose, promoting, recognizing, and rewarding the achievement of excellence in academics. The Foundation promotes high levels of academic success at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Specifically, the Foundation grants scholarships, recognizes high-performing middle school students via our Scholars’ Tea, offers college preparation workshops to high school students, and provides students living in high-poverty areas of the city with school supplies twice yearly through their schools and/or social service agencies in their communities.
The Foundation has a second purpose, namely mentoring young ladies. This effort is currently conducted under the auspices of our AKAdette and ASOEF L.I.T.E. programs, which serve young middle and high school ladies. Our ASOEF AKAdettes remain in the group through graduation and receive a combination of knowledge, skill, and community service provider experiences during their participation. Our ASOEF L.I.T.E. young ladies focus on enhancing their leadership skills and qualities before they embark on their high school journeys.
A third purpose of the Achieving Standards of Excellence Foundation is to serve the community. To this end, the Foundation assists several groups throughout the year with food giveaways, Christmas toy sorting and bagging, and tutoring.
Mission
Achieving Standards of Excellence Foundation (ASOEF) is committed to providing services and programs that assist all community members in achieving and excelling at their personal best.
Vision
To foster opportunities to achieve academic success and personal excellence, and to provide support for our most vulnerable and under-represented in our community.
